Casino Dealers

A casino dealer is also called a croupier. He is an employee in a casino who is mainly responsible for taking bets from players and paying winners in a table. A croupier used to be called a dealer because he is the one dealing out cards to players in a card game like blackjack, poker and craps. But as years passed and the games of casino diversified, a croupier’s task also widened. Hence, a croupier is any person mediating in a table that takes and pays bets.

A casino dealer has a basic salary as he works mainly for the casino management, and not for the players. Because of this, he is expected to be unaffected with the proceedings of the game. He is expected to maintain a fair stance throughout, treating all players equally, without favoring anyone. He should not take a personal interest in the results of the game.

However, in some cases, players recognize the hard work of croupiers and give them monetary tips. Tips are often given by a client in recognition of good service extended to them. It is the same for a casino dealer. He could earn big from generous tips alone on top of his basic salary. Many winning players share their bonuses to a dealer and fellow players.

A dealer could accept tips if the management allows it. There are some casinos that prohibit this practice because it might taint the impartiality of dealers. It also depends on the general customs of a country or state regarding tipping.

If tipping is allowed, it can be done in two ways. First, there is individual tipping in which a player’s tip can be pocketed by the dealer for himself. The advantage of this is that dealers should try to please their players by giving them excellent service to be given a big tip. The harder they work, the more tips they will possibly get out of the graciousness of clients, and the more they will earn. But the disadvantage to this is that sometimes dealers become partial to players who give bigger tips and thus their judgments could be clouded and be tempted to favor these players to win a game.

Thus, another way to handle tips is to form a pooled fund. This means that individual tips received are gathered in a box for general pooling. At the end of the day, the total amount obtained will be divided equally among the staff. This is done in hopes of maintaining professionalism among all croupiers.

In addition, casino dealers are also required to maintain a proper decorum at all times. Clients can drink, smoke and gamble but the dealers are not be allowed to do the same while they are working. They will also be discouraged to mingle with clients to keep a professional aura at all times. Thus, dealers are often required to wear uniforms to differentiate them easily from clients and to mean that they are currently working.

Casino dealers undergo training and the methods vary from country to country. In North America, the first game dealers learn is for the game of blackjack because this is the most popular game played there. It is simple to learn and errors or misdeals in this game are not very costly to the casino. It is quite different in Europe. Basic training in Europe starts with roulette. As a dealer advances, he is also taught how to deal in more complicated games like craps and poker. He is taught about the complicated payout system. A dealer must be competent in his craft or the casino might lose because of him.

In some casinos, dealers may not choose a table or game. The management will be the one to assign them based on how popular games are. Casinos have a high turnover rate of staff. In about a year, croupiers will have to learn a second game, for some a third or fourth game. Dealers have to keep on learning until they become competent in all games. The more diverse and reliant they become, the higher their salary will be.

Casino dealers are exposed to health hazards to some extent. They become passive smokers due to the smoke they get to inhale from smoking clients. Many casinos allow smoking inside their premises. Some countries are aware of this danger so that in Britain, a law was passed to ban smoking inside casinos. However, in some other places like in Las Vegas, smoking is still allowed inside the casinos and this poses serious health risks not just to croupiers but also to non-smoking players.

Trained dealers must acquire for a license if they want to work for big casino houses. The license encompasses a police background check to make sure that they have had no previous encounter with the law. Prior to getting a license, their credit rating will also be checked. Their license might be put on hold if found out that they have a bad credit rating. Passing these two factors means they are ready to begin employment in any casino.

Apart from getting the license though, croupiers must pass another test. Before being allowed on the gambling table, he will first undergo an actual examination to determine if his skills pass the standards of a casino management. A dealer should master the techniques of dealing. Speed can come in later once he has mastered the techniques. The newbie dealers are sometimes called “lumpies” because they could not yet do a smooth shuffling of cards and chips, hence the lumpy effect. The more experienced dealers could shuffle cards and manipulate chips in a very smooth manner. In most cases, it only takes 3 months for a lumpy dealer to perfect the craft and be dexterous.

Becoming a casino dealer is not an easy job and it is not for everyone. But many dealers who share their personal stories say that the job is interesting if only because each day is very different from the previous day. There is no monotony on the job because they deal with different players everyday.
