Mobile Technology Continues to Transform Casinos and the Gambling Industry

The gambling industry is constantly evolving, with new brick and mortar casinos popping up around the world and online casinos emerging as popular virtual gaming centers. While the Internet itself radically changed how games are played globally — allowing greater access to gambling opportunities and creating new forms of interaction with fellow players — it is mobile technology that is driving yet another transformation of the gambling industry these days.

Gambling no longer requires that you leave your house. Online casinos offer a comprehensive gaming experience, with everything from slots to multi-player poker rooms where you can play against real people in a virtual environment. Advanced technology has allowed for the creation of reliable player tracking systems and most online casinos have a consistent record of honoring the winnings of their users.

As more and more users have access to broadband internet, the games themselves are becoming more intricate, with complex graphics and special effects. Just as slot machines have evolved in brick and mortar casinos, so they have in the world of online gambling. Online slots often feature video game quality effects, composed soundtracks and narratives that make the games more engaging. When it comes to multi-player games, online casinos offer an interface that allows you to easily interact with fellow users, replicating what a gambler experiences at an actual casino.

Nowhere is the evolution of the gambling industry more evident than in the world of mobile technology. Smartphones and tablets allow players to gamble from anywhere. A user can now play games online while waiting in line at the supermarket or while traveling on the train, for example. Many online casinos have released their own applications, which allow players to easily sign in and start playing while also offering features that let users track their earnings and payouts and review their playing history.

Already a major factor in the gambling industry, it is clear that mobile technology will continue to evolve and attract more users. Juniper Research, the independent mobile telecoms research organization that specializes in analyzing high growth opportunities on mobile platforms, predicts that as much as 100 billion dollars will move through gambling applications on mobile devices by the year 2017. This growth is partly due to increased access to online casinos via cheaper and more advanced mobile devices, but it is also due to projected changes in local laws in certain countries that will permit more people to gamble legally.

Brick and mortar casinos certainly aren’t going away, but it’s clear that online casinos represent a new era in the gambling industry. Mobile technology takes this evolution one step further by providing broader access and increased convenience. While physical casinos can sometimes struggle to attract customers, online casinos simply have to find their way onto the smartphones and tablets of prospective gamblers. Finally, as mobile devices themselves become more complex, we may even see the introduction of new gambling environments, such as virtual 3d casinos which would yet again fundamentally alter the gaming world.

Texas is Mulling over the Legalization of Casino Gaming

Trouble is brewing in the Texas horse racing industry with some individuals pushing for legalized gambling to bring it back to life. The main reason for this counter-reaction is because numerous breeders are leaving Texas for other states that have legalized gambling and are now attracting bigger crowds. Studies indicate that the Oklahoma horse industry has grown exponentially, bringing in $3.6 billion in 2012. On the other hand, in Texas, only 300 foals legible for horse racing were registered in the year 2013, these figures are a far-cry from the peak of more than 4,000 that used to be registered during the heydays.

The report by the Texas Racing Commission in 2011 indicated that attendance has dropped 12%, and the money wagered fell 23% across the state during the 5 year period under-study. While the horse racing industry may not exactly be hemorrhaging in Texas, stringent regulations are keeping it from asserting itself competitively. Statistics further reveal that, over the past 20-years; institutionalization of legalized gambling in the US has seen a phenomenal growth in the gambling industry from a paltry 2 states at the beginning to 48 states today which allow some form of legal gambling. Out of these numbers; 40 states now allow gambling of the casino nature.

Many states outside Texas have witnessed a rise in racing-parks with casinos. Texas, on the other hand, as seen a drop in revenue; at the moment Texas spends $4.37 billion annually on the gambling industry of its neighbor states such as New Mexico, Oklahoma and Louisiana. Industry analysts opine that the racetrack casinos could potentially add-up to 75,000 jobs, and about $8.5 billion in economic growth stimulus statewide. This is in addition to revenues accruing to the hospitality industry which includes hotels, restaurants among other entertainment avenues. Once the legislation passes through, it is expected that the city of Houston will to benefit the most.

However, there are those who are arguing against the approval of the gambling law. According to the think-tank; Texas Public Policy Institute, up-to 27 out of the 57 counties with legalized casino gambling in the US experienced loss of jobs and a 10% – 20% reduction in local business. Case in point is the Atlantic City, where up to 50% of the city’s retail businesses and eateries shut-down within 10 years of legalization of the gambling industry. This is in addition to an increase in the number of violent crimes, which went up 13% among the counties with casinos that were at least 4-years in business.

Despite this sentiment, the gaming industry is exuberant and insistent that the benefits far outweigh the shortcomings. They are of the view that Texans should be left to choose the level of gaming standard they want; whether it will be casino games, slot machines or video terminals as well as the venues they want authorized. Supporters believe that going by the recent poll numbers a clear 80% of Texans support the referendum while 64% support expanded gaming limits in the state.

5 Reasons Why People Love to Gamble Online

Different things make different people happy. One of those things is gambling online. Why is it so much fun? Probably because even though you know you’re playing against a computer, it provides a great deal of satisfaction if you can successfully beat it.

No matter if the game is poker, slots, or blackjack; you’re playing against either technology or a person, depending on the game. In general, people can’t seem to get enough of it. But why?

Here’s the top five possible reasons why people love to gamble online:

1. People are eager and hopeful for the outcome

Although people base their happiness on many different things every day, a professional online gambler bases their happiness on a game that could go in any direction. Let’s face it – it’s hard enough to bluff your opponent sitting at the same table. But, think how hard it is if you can’t even see them. You can’t pick up on their body language, how much there sweating, or their facial expressions. The unknown is exciting.

2. Gambling gives people something to do

Not only is there a chance of winning a lot of money, gambling online keeps people busy. Many people actually make their money back, but for those who don’t, gambling is a time investment. They love the thrill of the game and it keeps them occupied both day and night when they have extra time on their hands.

3. Gambling is a thrill

Most everyone who’s ever won money gambling can tell you in detail how thrilling it was to win their first jackpot. For some it can be addictive. They try to recapture that moment again and again. There’s always the chance they might hit it big.

4. Players honestly believe they will hit the Jackpot

Many people spend a great deal of money and time gambling in casinos because they honestly believe they are the ones that will hit the huge jackpot. It’s that hope that keeps them going. For some, it gets them up in the morning. Everyone has a different outlook on money and how to attain it. Gambling is just one of those ways.

5. People see other people making a lot of money gambling

In 2012, some of the most successful casino players online made tens of millions of dollars. Therefore, it’s easy to see how any poker player is striving to earn a few million dollars, which is exactly why they are playing. They are playing for one reason and one reason only, to become the best player online and bank as much money as they can.

So, there are many positive aspects to gambling online as well as negative. As long as you can play responsibly and keep it fun there is no reason why you shouldn’t play as often as you like. Gambling online is a hobby just like anything else. But like anything else, it’s up to you to determine how far you can go and how much you can spend. Before you even start to play determine how much money you can or will spend. Once you hit that target, you’re done. That’s simply being responsible.

Two Steps Forward One Step Back: What’s New in Gambling?

According to most religious traditions that include the concept of a god, gambling is considered a deadly sin. This belief stems from the notion that the gambler is committing crimes of hubris in trying to bypass the will of God. In some countries that have very strong fundamentalist religious beliefs gambling is still prohibited as morally wrong. In our western folk literature the gambler has been seen as an outlaw, a mischief-maker. The activities around gambling have been seen to take place in dark and shady circumstances. Criminal activity and gangsters have been associated with the dark world of the casino. Legal prohibition against gambling derived from the same source as prohibition against alcohol.

What’s new is that gambling laws have been liberalizing very rapidly in North America. The increasing public perception is that gambling is recreation. Ideas about responsible gambling have been promulgated in the press much as ideas about safe and responsible alcohol use have shown up in the media and advertising. Gambling casinos have been coupled with some of the best entertainment venues in the nation adding to the perception of gambling as a wholesome pastime.

Part of what happened, of course, is that governments have discovered the tax revenue potential of gambling and gambling casinos. Gambling is seen as a painless tax, enabling governments to raise revenue without instituting real taxes. In many cases gambling has enabled state and municipal governments to move out of what had seemed inescapable deficit. Gambling has also been a boon to charitable organizations who often sponsor gambling events, no longer limited to Bingo as they once were. New casinos are opening in Atlantic City, New York, Maryland, Ohio, North Dakota and elsewhere. Kentucky lawmakers are working on an expansion of gambling in their state.

Although the liberalization of gambling laws continues apace, the fight goes on in many places as well. Saratoga, New York recently took a stand by passing a resolution to keep gambling casinos out of their county in spite of the New York State law that permits gambling. Part of Saratoga’s motivation, of course, is to prevent casinos from competing with Saratoga’s very profitable horse race gambling business. Pennsylvania casinos have seen a decline in revenues for the first time since 2006 when the state opened up casino gambling. Other jurisdictions such as Ohio and Florida have seen a leveling of gambling revenue.

What’s really new is the increased liberalization of on line gambling. A few governments such as Washington, DC., Nevada, and Kentucky are set to institute large scale on line gambling. Online gambling does pose special problems because minors and youth can not easily be barred from it. As online gambling expands, much concern has been expressed about gambling addiction among youth. Keith Whyte, executive director of the National Council on Problem Gambling estimates half a million teenagers have gambling addiction problems in the United States. Whyte advises that as states join the liberalization of on-line gambling laws they should be conducting studies of the effects on youth gambling addiction. As governments maximize revenue from gambling, Whyte says, governments should take steps to minimize social costs.
