Small Missouri Town to Get New Casino

When it comes to the Show-Me State, gambling is not the first concept that comes to mind. However, Missouri unrolled the carpet opening a brand new casino toward the end of October, 2012. This is the states’s thirteenth casino as a few are scattered among the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers on both sides of the state in Kansas City and St. Louis.
According to Missouri law, all casinos in the state are to be riverboat casinos, along the banks of the major rivers though many of these casinos have had issues with flooding in previous years, having had to shut down for long periods of time, costing the city and the state a lot of money that is spent on gambling.
The Isle of Capri Casinos, Inc. broke ground in 2011 on a brand new casino set up in Cape Girardeau. The company spent $135 million to build the casino in this southeast Missouri town. The amenities of the casino include five restaurants, a thousand slot machine, 28 game tables, and a multipurpose room that seats 750 people. The casino itself is estimated to bring in at least a million people each year to downtown Cape Girardeau and has created 450 new jobs for the area. The majority of people see this as an enormous economic boost for this small Missouri community with a population of just under 40,000 residents.
In 2008, a ballot was approved by Missouri voters that limited the number of casinos in the state to 13 casino licenses. In St. Louis in 2010, one casino closed. On behalf of the Missouri Gaming Commission, the Cape Girardeau location was chosen rather than other alternative proposed locations in Kansas City and St. Louis.
The Isle of Capri is based in St. Louis, Missouri and operates a total of 15 other casinos, including one additional one already in Missouri. The entire Gaming Commission of the state of Missouri had to meet in order to approve the opening and staff members tested the equipment of all operations before opening the casino to the public.
While there was some opposition to having the casino in Cape Girardeau, the largest concern when casinos come to town is that they are thought to instigate higher crime rates. Since the 1990s, when casinos first entered the Midwestern states, there is no proof behind this idea. Instead, however, it has created a lot of excitement and potential in the city of Cape Girardeau to give it an economic surge, not just at the casino but in the entire community.
The great thing about the casino landing in Cape Girardeau is that there is little other reason for someone to visit the area as it is a small community. There are minimal reasons for tourists to visit this area unless people have family there or just happen to run across the area. A casino should draw several opportunities and help boost the economy and will allow for other businesses to grow in the vicinity as well since tourism to the area should boom.
