Mixed Reactions On Governor Coumo’s Proposal To Expand Casino Gambling In New York

It is alleged that a group close to Governor Coumo has received a couple of million dollars from parties interested in gambling even as the Legislature approved a constitutional amendment to allow privately owned casinos in New York.

The amendment has to be approved by lawmakers and then voters to make it operative. If finally approved, we may soon see seven full-scale privately owned casinos in New York State worth billions of dollars.

Not surprisingly, Albany is rumored to be the city likely to be benefited by the new amendment. The capital city of New York State has a thriving night life. After all, it has a favorable geographical location. It is equidistant between Montreal and New York City and also in close proximity to Buffalo and Boston.

Politically, casino interests leave no stone unturned to have their way. It is reported that gambling companies, casinos, and Indian tribes fund heavily to federal candidates.

But Mr.Cuomo has disputed he was influenced by money from the gambling industry – even though he has said in a speech earlier that his support to legalize gambling is for the jobs that casino industry can generate.

An outside chance for gambling and casinos in Texas

Legalized casinos and gambling are hot topics in the State of Texas. Budgetary shortfall has forced the state senator to ask his legislators to consider a gaming bill that can generate potential revenue to avert cuts in spending in health care and education.

But there are obstacles in the way. According to a study, nobody has been able to bring a concrete plan that convinces that gambling and casinos will benefit everybody in the Texas counties.

Second, anti-gaming forces have a strong say in Texas. They have been controlling key committee positions for the past number of years.

The general consensus is a gaming referendum will pass. That is because the public in Texas want gaming and casinos in their state.

They have a strong reason too. Every year Texans spend close to $2.5 billion in casinos and gambling in other states. Surely they feel this money, if spent in their own state, can boost businesses.

Is Taunton ready for Las Vegas style gambling?

As recently as April this year parents in Taunton were concerned that a tribal casino is likely to come up near East Taunton Elementary School. They were apprehensive that a surge in traffic will pose risks of accidents as well as have an adverse effect on the quality of life.

Things aren’t decided as the debate rages on various issues. Some people feel the dangers are overstated as the school as per them is set way off.

Those against gambling have other worries. They feel with casinos in the neighborhood, the character of the locality will undergo a paradigm shift. Traditionally, the area is known to be a closely knit community.

But the talk in recent weeks is revolved around whether Taunton will soon have full-fledged gambling. The lure is new jobs and the potential of millions of dollars to rake in.

Everybody is keeping their fingers crossed. The discussions will be hot and will justify on whether the economy should rebuild on casinos and gambling.

Spanish Authorities Demand Taxation

Only weeks ahead of the first issuing of Spanish gambling licenses, the authorities did a volte-face and demanded that the applicants return backdated taxes for the previous four years. This unfortunate and game-changing surprise was not welcome and the poker information website Pokerfuse reported that many big Spanish gambling operators may face huge financial losses as a result. Of these, Bwin.Party is estimated to be losing around Euro 60 million, whereas it is a whopping Euro 200 million for PokerStars! The latter is actively considering repaying the amount, but the others may find it rather difficult to afford it and could end up withdrawing their license applications. According to Pokerfuse, the Gaming Act passed during the previous year had forced operators to get their licenses from January, 2012. But, deadlines were missed and there were consequent delays in regulation. The gambling operators were permitted to continue their operations till the licenses came through. When the licenses would finally come through, they would have to be prepared to meet the tax bills from July 2011, when the Act had been passed. This new move by the Spanish government for retrieving four year taxes is bound to have a lasting impact both on the business and monetary calculations of these companies.

Nutblocker bids adieu

Nearly a year and a half after it was launched, the poker educational website Nutblocker finally bade farewell. This website had been the brainchild of many leading internet stalwarts to enhance the player’s knowledge regarding pot Limit Omaha & Mixed Games. It was designed to improve interaction among the players and contained expert advice for their benefit including interviews with the most successful players. In March of this year, the company which had launched the Nutblocker magazine for less than $30 discontinued it. In a specification it was upheld that all the buyers had been duly compensated for all purchases made. The magazine and other content were left free on the website as a goodwill gesture.

Irish Bill to raise Euros

The politicians in Ireland are all set to pass an enactment prior to the summer break in the Parliament. This is directed to impose a one percent tax on the turnover for all gambling operators that are dealing in Irish bets. It is believed that during the first year, the taxes are going to be paid by 77 percent operators. This is expected to bring in 50 million Euros. The companies like Boyle Sports and Paddy Power are regarded as the most targeted betting companies. A Betfair commissioned report conducted by experts at PricewaterhouseCoopers holds that the taxes are expected to absorb 77 percent of the market from 2013 to 2016 and generate nearly 50 million Euros.

Partnership for Gaming

Buzz Sports which is based out of Leeds is all set to partner with Boylesports to launch ZonePlay vis-à-vis the sports betting site called Boylesports.com. This launch will then allow UK and Irish punters to bet on something which happens next in addition to the current betting markets which this sports site already offers. ZonePlay will include English Premier League soccer, cricket, tennis, baseball, basketball, and NFL.

Online Gambling Takes a Step Forward in the State of New Jersey

New Jersey gambling is making news by taking firm and forward steps toward legalizing online gambling in the state. The Senate Budget and Appropriation Committee last month passed some laws to this effect. This was followed by a similar legislation passed next by the State Assembly. This move has come in the wake of the realization by many industry leaders and legislators of the need for New Jersey to be a pioneer in introducing gambling laws in an effort to legalize online gambling. This would help the state to be in the race ahead of others like Iowa, California, or Nevada.

Incidentally, the land-based casinos in Atlantic City have been witnessing tremendous decline in revenues, and it is the belief among lawmakers like Senator Lesniak that online gambling when legalized can improve the situation. The past three years have been particularly slow in generating revenues. This ailing industry can hope to be revived if online gambling is legalized. The President of the state Casino Association in a statement declared his state’s support for online wagering. But, this must not harm consumers in any way. He clarified that all Atlantic City casinos are bound to be consolidated provided online gambling laws come into force. The current gambling bill should be passed to improve the tax revenues instead of the profits actually moving overseas. In this context, Robert Griffin insisted that New Jersey legislators should actively consider enacting the gambling bill. The online betting scheme is likely to be far more profitable when compared to the existing forms of wagering. Along with taxes, licensing fees have been proposed to be collected from casinos online when gambling becomes legal in the state. During the first year, the licensing fees are expected to be $200,000, whereas the cost for renewing license the following year is scheduled to be $100,000. Interestingly, all funds collected from licensing fees will be utilized for aiding programs dedicated to helping those suffering from gambling problems.

The state of New York is also expected to launch few more brick-and-mortar casinos soon. This move is again likely to adversely affect the revenues of Atlantic City land casinos. Incidentally, the primary objections to this new bill come particularly from the crippled horseracing sectors.

Jackpot Party Casino Launch

The Jackpot Party Casino recently introduced a set of new slots. The first of these is the Magic Wand with 25 pay lines. This game is exclusive to the casino and is based on a theme of illusion. There are some special features like free spins, wild bonuses, and progressive bonus. WMS Gaming, which owns this casino, recently signed a deal with Konami Gaming Inc which is a Las Vegas based game developer to further strengthen its games suite. Konami Gaming has given its license to many slot titles to WMS Gaming like the Rawhide, Norse Warrior, and Jumpin’ Jalapenos. These are to come to all WMS Gaming’s online casinos like the Jackpot Party Casino. The WMS President Edidin feels that by adding these slot games on all WMS online platforms, they will get a tremendous boost. They will guarantee a unique gaming experience to all the regular players in this casino site. The company COO Steve Sutherland announced this new launch which he believes to be a great way to consolidate revenues even further and keep their members satisfied.

Enforcement Of Online Gambling Schedules Reiterated By Spain

To dispel all doubts about whether the national gambling regulator of Spain, Alejo, would indeed enforce the licenses to the deserving applicants, the home affairs ministry reconfirmed this decision. The doubts had arisen about the likelihood of the regulations not coming into force because there had been changes in the staff and the previous deadline had been extended as well. Moreover, the number of applications had been colossal – nearly 59 applications had been obtained. But, with this announcement, two things became clear: the online services could begin at once and in-play betting would be discouraged. Incidentally, this speculation about the Spanish gambling regulator not being able to deliver his promise rose from the fact that the CEO of 888 Holdings had earlier made a statement to that effect after he had returned from Madrid. He had visited Madrid to assess the progress and he came to the conclusion that the Spanish regulator may need some more time to execute this move. The CEO, Mattingley, nevertheless had been visibly impressed by the regulatory body’s reaction and promptness to incorporate all the changes and ideas suggested to them.

Most European operators running online casinos have also applied for these licenses and hope to achieve them soon enough. In fact, as the deadline keeps getting stretched, they are losing out. At the same time, they have to bear substantial expenses to keep their operations in a state of readiness so that as soon as they obtain the license, they can begin to operate. So, this statement by Mattingley has further added to their frustration. They are now monitoring the prevailing situation to understand in which direction the regulations are likely to move. They are not sure about how much credibility they can attach to the Spanish government’s assurance. Side by side, another cause of concern for these operators has been the growing number of court cases involving these online gambling operators. They fear that local operators might be able to get some kind of injunction to delay the process. For instance, the local Spanish group called Codere has obtained injunctions against foreign gambling operators. In one case, the Madrid Commercial Court decided against Sportingbet. This company is still fighting this case and has applied for a legal permit under the gambling laws of the country. On the basis of meetings with regulators, it hopes to get its license shortly.

Launch of new Microgaming Flash Games

This will give players a super opportunity to win bigger payouts and enjoy top-class entertainment. These four games are Tiger v Bear Siberian Standoff, Karate Pig, Arctic Fortune, and Mystique Grove. All these are video slots. The Arctic Fortune is based on a Nordic fantasy theme and comes with many bonus features like free spins, multipliers, and wilds. The graphics are stunning and the animations exquisite. Another fantasy-themed game with five reels is the Mystique Grove. The Tiger v Siberian Standoff has 25 pay lines and five reels. Players can experience great slot actions when they choose either of the two characters and prepare them for battle against each other. The Karate Pig has a kung-fu theme and great graphics.

The 15th Gaming Conference Returns To Las Vegas Next Year

The International Gaming Institute (IGI) of UNLV has declared that the 15th Gaming Conference will take place at Caesars Palace from May 27 to May 31, 2013. This conference that spans four days is held every three years. It was first held in 1974. In Las Vegas, the conference was last held in 2000, which was the 4th time in this city since it was first held. Now, it will return to Vegas for the 5th time next year, after a long gap of 12 years.

The Director of the Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming of UNR had earlier planned to organize this conference on “Gambling and Risk Taking” at Lake Tahoe. But, the lack of funds deterred them to host the conference alone. Moreover, according to him, partnering with the University of Nevada seemed to be a good decision, as Las Vegas, popular as the Casino City, needed to host one of the most important conferences of the gaming industry to bring gamblers and casino operators on a common platform.

Also, the partnership between UNLV and UNR would combine not only financial resources, but also academic resources. According to the Executive Director of UNLV, this is a historic partnership.

Participants

In the last conference, in 2009, around 300 people had participated and the event saw about 180 research paper presentations. Over the years, the conference has drawn quite a number of researchers and academics.

This time, both UNR and UNLV are considering putting a call for research papers. They are aiming for 500 participants next year, including policy makers, researchers, academics, gaming regulators, and gaming operators.

It is also expected that the 15th gaming conference next year will draw the participation of mathematicians, health care providers, international delegates, and even gamblers and enthusiasts of the gaming industry.

Topics

The focus of the conference will be online gaming, casinos of the US, Asian gambling industry, gambling addiction, the future of gambling in Las Vegas, and new technologies in the gaming industry.

The 1974 scenario

In the 1970s and earlier, hardly anybody ever studied gambling as a subject. Research was absent. Industry executives participating in a gaming conference hosted by academics was unheard of. In fact, the gaming industry found it uncomfortable associating with academia in those days.

But, when the first gaming conference was held in 1974, things started to change. Now, the conference sees the participation of people from a broad range of fields, from professional gamblers and casino operators to mathematicians, researchers, and even behavioral scientists!

With about 40 states making gambling a legal activity, a lot of interest has been created in the gaming industry and this sector has become one of the most important ones, and of course one of the most lucrative ones, in the world.

Besides all this, the gaming conference of 2013 will help preserve the image of Nevada as a gambling destination. This is important in the wake of growing competition in this field, as the industry is spreading its wings far and wide across the globe, including Singapore and Macau.
