Hong Kong Regulator Investigate Sands China

Sands China Inc has been in business for a very long time. It is the leading gaming hotels and resorts developers in Macau. Macau is the leading gambling centers of the world along with Las Vegas. Only six companies have license to operate casinos in Macau and Sands is one of them. The company also has a subsidiary working in Las Vegas which operates the gaming resorts and hotels in the United States of America.

Very recently, Sands China has come under investigation by the Hong Kong financial regulators upon allegation of possible breach and complaints against the company from the United States. The company’s Las Vegas operations are also being investigated by the US Securities and Exchange Commission as well as the US Justice Department. The company has also obtained subpoena from the Justice Department as part of the Jacobs case for wrongful termination.

The main reason for the investigation is supposedly the allegation of improper payments to foreign officials by the company. This is prohibited by the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. This is in lieu of the lawsuit filed by former CEO of Sands China Steven Jacobs, who was fired by the company in the month of July 2010. Jacobs alleges that he was wrongfully fired upon refusing to use leverage to gain concessions from the government.

Jacobs also said that Mr. Adelson, the chairman of the board of directors, asked him to conduct secret investigations on government officials of Macau to find out some information that could be held against them and then used to the advantage of the company.

These investigations are likely to take four to six months and therefore the company will be under the microscope till then. But, the real reason for the Hong Kong investigation is not clear and the connection to the US case is just speculation on the part of the media and statements made by Adelson. It is only in the past few years that Hong Kong has tightened their regulations regarding market misconduct.

Adelson, in a statement to the press, claims that if the whole investigation is based on Jacobs’ allegations, it would blow away quickly. He has completely brushed off the Jacobs event as “nothing serious” and even went so far to state that no government official is going to admit to bribery. According to him, once the investigators got a chance to check all the documents they have requested for including email correspondence of Adelson, it will be clear that no wrongdoing took place.

When the news of the investigation broke out, there was an instant fall in the share value of the company in the New York Stock Exchange as well as Hong Kong stock exchange. Experts feel that as long as Jacobs’ lawsuit stands and the investigation is under way, the company is going to suffer substantially in goodwill as well as share value. In fact, some say that it will also affect the casino earning in the future.

Wynn’s ranking is obtained for its service, innovation, production, operation and growth. Its profitability in Macau is also another point that won it the ranking. The company has gaming resorts in the two gaming centers of the world – Macau and Las Vegas. Tablets Users Prefer Gaming On Tablets

Although tablets have only recently stepped into the world of gadgets, computer users are seen to be making a beeline for them, particularly if they happen to be gaming enthusiasts. The convenient size of tablets and their features which allow the screen to switch from portrait to landscape modes makes them all the more popular among online gaming addicts.

Reports suggest that a greater number of tablet users play online games than watch news or surf the net. Although most of the players playing online casino games hardly ever do so to earn money, the high numbers indicate that many are interested in gaming. Had the United States government made efforts to make gambling online legal, many tablet users would actually take part in online casino games instead playing at free gaming websites.

Fitch Report

The credit ratings company Fitch Ratings recently released a report about the possibility of online gambling becoming lawful in the U.S. The company reported that many states had been debating on such a proposal and attempts have been made to make online gambling lawful. Although such attempts to regulate online gambling have not really succeeded, the objective is more than apparent.

The Fitch report states that as much as five to six billion dollars are going overseas from revenues generated through online gambling in the United States. With regulations, this figure is bound to increase significantly. Land based casino gambling accounts for about $60 billion currently. However, there are many questions that remain unanswered so far as regulating online gambling goes. Interestingly, lottery companies feel threatened about the losses they are likely to face if online gambling gets legalized. Internet gambling is slowly growing into a major threat and whether it needs to be stopped to protect land-based revenues obtained from casinos is a debate that is still inconclusive. The best alternative is for the land based casinos to try to place their products online instead of trying to stop the government from legalizing online gaming. Fortunately, some Nevada casinos are open to doing so and other casinos should actually start thinking of following their examples.

European Commission Release

The European Commission released a paper on online gambling and debates have been going on since contemplation of the effects of the Green Paper. This debate will be thrown open to the public to get their opinions. The Green Paper is no doubt a controversial document and different online gambling trade groups with much hold over the online gambling world are concerned about the issues discussed here. One of such associations called the Remote Gaming Association appears to have reservations about the lack of commitment on part of the European Commission to implement the EU’s basic principles. It appears that the EC, acting on behalf of the EU, wants a more fragmented approach to internet gambling on a national level.

The EC has particularly called upon those involved in the online gambling world to answer the questions in this questionnaire. The greater the numbers of responses from interested parties, the greater are the chances of the EC knowing what the people really feel regarding this issue.

Australian Senator Speaks Against Online Gambling

Nick Xenophon, the infamous anti-online gambling advocate who is also an independent senator in the Parliament, came up with a novel idea for exercising greater control over online gambling. This was done to stop illegal betting that is carried on online and the attempts by losing players to avoid making credit card payments. He advocated stringent controls regarding advertising for companies having wagering products. Although laws in Australia ban online poker rooms and online casinos, as many as a billion gets wagered every year and there are hardly any persecutions related to such crimes.

Slots in the City

Quicksilver launched its latest release named “Slots in the City” which is currently active on its website. This is a multi-line game which blends the lifestyles of New York and Las Vegas and is at par with popular games like Le Posh Nosh, Maxamillion, Top Banana, etc. This new game comes with sophisticated graphics and stunning animations with 3D animated characters all in the midst of a busy city life. The classy New York lifestyle gets reflected in the yellow cabs, cocktails, and killer heels images. The game features a triple progressive jackpot which is not linked to the betting amount. The three random jackpots can be won through any paid spin at any time and playing with any amount.

Microgaming Withdraws

Microgaming has decided to leave the US casinos and all Microgaming powered games have been withdrawn with effect from this month. The Department of Justice made its decision leading to casinos barring Americans from playing there like the Royal Vegas, Vegas Palms, Fortune Lounge, All Slots, and Rich Reels- the list just keeps getting longer. In view of this ironical development, the US players are likely to resort to less trustworthy gaming sites that may not be able to protect player privacy or abide by professional ethics.

European Commission Turns Down Greek Request

The European Commission yet again turned down the request by Greece to consider its online gambling rules at a time when the politics and economy of the state are already in jeopardy. Some consideration is expected during June beginning and reports suggest that Greece’s ambition to implement reforms and generate tax revenues may not materialize in the end. The ruling party had claimed that such proposals would turn the already economically challenged country into a huge casino which is why the laws need to be revised.

The draft law is expected to generate as much as Euro 700 million every year through regulating the online gambling market. However, soon after the Minister presented the draft law to party members, fears of this law leading to gaming overabundance were voiced to the press.

Arrest of Poker Room Executives

Executives of three large online poker rooms were accused of frauds and money laundering in Manhattan and have been arrested for violating gambling laws in the United States. Nearly eleven people have been charged with which includes distinguished men like the Poker Stars founder.

These executives allegedly bribed banks to ensure that financial transactions declared illegal by the UIGEA to and from their sites continued unabated. The civil law suit amounts to nearly $3 billion and the accused may have to face thirty years of imprisonment if found guilty.

Legalizing Online Gambling In The Netherlands

Major developments have occurred within the Netherlands over online gambling. The government has stated that by 2015 Holland will open up its Internet gambling market. With this, a gambling authority will be created who will control any operations. The main reasons behind this move are not only to bring the gambling industry in line with other countries but also to increase revenue for sports related activities. It has been estimated that the auction of licenses for Internet gambling websites and lottery sites will amount to a yearly sum of approximately $14.1 million from the year 2012.

The Proposal

The proposal was put forward on 19th March 2011. This is a major development owning to the fact that previously the Netherlands was quite against online gambling, to the point that they took it as far as the highest courts within the European Union. It’s thought the move is mainly due to the fact that the new political party, elected in October of last year, is much more liberal than the previous administration.

The Present Situation

Within the Netherlands, it’s legal to gamble. However, the government has a very tight hold in terms of regulations, to the extent that all gambling throughout the country is under the control of the Holland Casino: the state gambling monopoly. This began as early as the 1970s with the introduction of the first ever casino in the Netherlands. This has since expanded to 14. The country has had a large amount of criticism from others within the EU due to this monopoly. Nevertheless, the Dutch has justified their legislation by stating that it ensures fair play for all involved.

In terms of online gambling, the story is slightly different. The Netherlands is not keen on outside gambling sites being used by Dutch residents. From 2005, there has been strong opposition to gambling over the internet. Currently, it’s possible for individuals living within the Netherlands to use gambling sites based within the country. However, these have still not been given Dutch governmental approval. In fact, the Dutch government has made its disapproval obvious. In 2008, it sent lists of major foreign Internet sites used for gambling to banks within the country. They insisted that no dealings should be made with these. However, the banks chose not to acknowledge this information, claiming that such a move would be illegal.

EU Pressure

Today, the EU continue to push for the gambling monopoly to be disbanded. In 2010, the biggest online gaming exchange in the world, Betfair, and the largest bookmaker within Britain, Ladbrokes, filed suits against the country over its gambling policies. However, they were unsuccessful. Within Europe- Britain, France, Sweden, Italy, and Austria currently regulate gambling online. It’s felt that the Netherlands should go as far as to bring in licensing for online poker, sports betting, and bingo. It’s also been put forward that licensing systems should be made clearer and that the competition should be opened up, as opposed to the current monopoly which is in place.
