What Happened?

Under their promotional scheme, PokerStars released its television ads on Nine Network and Network Ten recently but Australian Authorities censored those ads saying that they breached the Australian Advertising Regulations.

The ads appeared in the coverage of Wimbledon 2009 on Nine Network and Network Ten. The authorities said that it was prohibited to promote online casino, gambling games or services on television.

According to Australian Advertising Regulations for internet casino games, no one can promote or endorse gambling on television. It is against the laws and anyone doing that may fall in serious legal troubles.

Actually, showing ads on television was a part of promotional strategy of PokerStars to reach more people and increase site visits. But in most countries, it is seen as an offense. The media cannot promote gambling openly and explicitly.

What Television Channels had to say?

Nine Network and Network Ten defended themselves by saying that PokerStars is free to join and anybody and everybody from around the world can join it absolutely free of cost. Technically, they are not sponsoring gambling and provoking people to play online casino games. They are just diverting players to visit an online casino site.

However, even after these arguments, both the channels are ordered to hold staff training meetings about internet gaming regulations. Authorities told them to implement rules and regulations strictly. In case of breach, the licensees as well as television channels will be challenged with immediate legal action.
